The University of Southern Mississippi's School of Social Science and Global Studies offers a Master of Arts in the Teaching of Languages. The MATL program, with emphases in Spanish, French, and TESOL, focuses on developing and enhancing the knowledge, skills, and theories in language, language acquisition, and language instruction that are essential for both effective teaching and successful learning. The large variety of courses, offered online and on campus, year-round, meet the multifaceted needs of today's language teachers.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham has been offering a teacher education program in English as a Second Language (ESL) for over 25 years. Our ESL Master’s degree has two tracks (alternative and traditional) that lead to ESOL certification from the ALSDE and a third track (non-certification) that is for teaching ESL in other states and/or to adults. Our Education Specialist degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) has one track that leads to ESOL certification from the ALSDE and another track (non-certification) that is for teaching ESL in other states and/or to adults. Alabama teachers who hold Class A certification in another teaching field can earn Class AA certification in ESOL by completing the EdS-TESOL. We also offer two graduate certificates: Teaching Multilingual Learners and Teaching English as an Additional Language. UAB’s ESL teacher education program is fully online.
